More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
Enhancing parent and child bonding by increasing time they are able to spend together during the working day. Helping Mums return to the workplace while continuing to nurse, and Dads spend more time with their children during their formative years. Creating a community of like-minded people and given them access to training by organising relevant workshops and seminars, opportunities for collaboration and networking with fellow coworkers as well as referring business between themselves. Reduction of CO2 due to reduced travel and commuting.
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
“The proportion of UK businesses using the home as their workspace is rising rapidly. In 2005 the then DTI found that 41% of all businesses (including the self- employed) were home-based (DTI, 2005). In the 2001 census 9.16% of the workforce was working mainly at/from home. And two-thirds of these were self-employed. There is a very strong link between homeworking and self employment. In 2009, 12.8% of the workforce (3.7 million people) worked mainly at or from home, again with around two-thirds being self-employed. Between 2001 and 2009, the number of home-based businesses (self-employed and mainly working from home) rose by 22% (2.3 million people in 2009). (Labour Force Survey, ONS 2009).” (Source: Workhubs Network report, June 2010) “The number of coworking spaces worldwide reached 1320. The strongest growth was recorded in many countries south of the equator in the past twelve months. The USA has the most number of coworking places at 537 venues whilst Great Britain has 61 places” (, Feb 2012). Additionally birth rates have increased dramatically in the UK.
What is your solution?
Third Door offers both flexible childcare and a professional space for people to work from, filling a need for flexible childcare based on a parents working needs, whilst providing a community of like-minded professionals who are able to network and collaborate with each other.
How will you deliver this?
Third Door currently operate from one site in Putney/Wandsworth and the aim is to expand the business in terms of what we can offer from onsite as well as grow into multiple sites.
